Tory Simon Kirby retains Brighton Kemptown seat despite Christian campaign to oust him

Conservative Simon Kirby has retained his Brighton Kemptown seat, despite a campaign to oust him because of his strong support for same-sex marriage.

Earlier this year, the Coalition for Marriage claimed to have 1,500 supporters in Kemptown, Brighton who would vote for candidates other than Simon Kirby, and said that voters should vote for “anyone other than” him because he supports same-sex marriage.

After contacting all other candidates in that seat, PinkNews has learned that none of them oppose same-sex marriage.

Mr Kirby won 18,428 votes, a 41% share, followed closely by Labour’s Nancy Platts with 17,738 votes, a 39% share.

As well as being a strong supporter of same-sex marriage, Mr Kirby also urged the Government to allow those in civil partnerships to be able to convert quicker.
